Introducing Awo Abokor, EDI Program Coordinator

Submitted on Monday, January 23, 2023

Awo Abokor has joined the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion unit at the Faculty of Information in the role of program coordinator. With more than 10 years of experience working on anti-racism, gender, health and policy issues with organizations and institutions in Toronto and around the country, Awo hopes to build on the excellent work already being done at the Faculty to create a more inclusive and equitable campus.

In her role, she will be mainly working with students and initiatives directly targeted towards students. Awo’s responsibilities include:

  • Events and programming
  • Trainings and workshops for students
  • Community outreach and engagement
  • Complaint’s intake and referrals
  • Consultations and/or collaborations on events and programming with student groups

Awo’s main focus in her first year is cultivating relationships with all Faculty stakeholders, including students, who she has already started collaborating with on a variety of EDI-related activities and initiatives.

Additionally, she hopes to create a BIPOC affinity circle at the Faculty of Information for students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) to foster networking, community building, and connection.
