Mountains May Depart (2015)- A Zhangke Jia Film Screening

Join the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Unit (EDIU) for a special screening of Mountains May Depart 山河故人 (2015) directed by Zhangke Jia 贾樟柯. Immerse yourself in this cinematic journey at the Claude T. Bissell Building, Learning Hub, Room BL404 (4th Floor) on Tuesday March 12th at 6:30pm.

This event will be moderated by Miko Wu, MI&MMSt Candidate at the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto.

This screening is a part of the EDIU Fellowship Program, an initiative by the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Unit within the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto.

About the Film:

Set against the backdrop of China’s evolving landscapes and shifting socio-political landscapes, Mountains May Depart (2015) by Zhangke Jia will take you on a poignant journey through three decades of profound change and personal upheaval.

From 1999 to 2025, the film portrays the intricacies of a love triangle among the river of historical and social changes. In the hands of director Jia, this film becomes a canvas for contemplating the impact of globalization, personal choices, and the ever-evolving landscape of family dynamics. The effects of time on relationships, migration, and the quest for freedom get intricately weaved and unfolded in between the story threads.

The film delves into themes of Asian family dynamics, historical shifts, migration, identity, and the longing for belonging. Through its rich narrative and compelling characters, the film offers profound insights into the complexities of human relationships and the enduring search for meaning in a rapidly changing world.
