Bachelor’s Students

The eligibility to take extra courses is subject to Faculty approval. Students are eligible to request up to 1.0 courses as extra. Permission should be requested via your academic advisor; required courses cannot be designated as ‘EXT’.

Extra courses are:

    • Listed with an EXT notation on the student’s transcript.
    • Subject to the same regulations for grading, withdrawal and failure, as courses required for the degree.
    • Not counted towards the student’s GPA – is not considered for averaging purposes.
    • Not convertible to credit courses towards the student’s degree, after the drop deadline period has passed.
    • Students will receive final grades to EXT courses.
    • The final grades will be presented on the student’s official University of Toronto transcript.

Master’s Students

As per School of Graduate Studies (SGS) regulations, graduate students may not enrol in additional half / full courses beyond the number of courses required by their program of study. An exception may occur when an extra course is required if, for example, a supervisor feels that a student needs additional background in order to do their research during their degree program.

Extra courses are subject to approval and Faculty permission is required; required courses cannot be designated as ‘EXT’.

Students are eligible to request to take up to 2 extra courses (i.e. 1.0-credit) as they work towards completing their degree requirements. Once students complete their last degree requirement, students are automatically signaled for graduation, and will not be able to take additional courses in a subsequent term.

Extra courses are:

    • Listed with an EXT notation on the student’s transcript.
    • Subject to the same regulations for grading, withdrawal and failure (FZ), as courses required for the degree.
